Summer  Programs in Valladolid 

In addition to our semester programs, BCA Universitas offers intensive, short-term programs in the summer focusing primarily on language acquisition and cultural understanding. These programs include classroom teaching and learning, individual home stays designed to help with language practice, films and other cultural activities and local educational excursions.

Course offerings in these short-term programs include the following:

June International Program
May 30-June 27, 2015

Curriculum: A total of 6 credits can be earned on the program.  Students take 4 hours of classes each day in the following courses:

  • Spanish Language (2 hours daily)
  • Hispanic Culture (1 hour daily)
  • Conversation (1 hour daily)

Cost: $2,395
Includes tuition, homestay accommodations with meals, orientation, student health insurance coverage, city tour, museum visit and other educational activities.  Independent study courses can be arranged if communicated in advance of the program.

July International Program
June 27 – July 18, 2015

Curriculum
Students can take 3 courses and earn 4 credits, or 2 courses for 3 credits.  All courses meet for 1.5 hours daily.  Courses are offered from the following list, however, availability is dependent upon sufficient enrollment.

  • Business Spanish
  • Spanish Literature
  • Art History
  • Conversation
  • Spanish Culture
  • Spanish Phonetic
  • Hispanic American Literature

Cost: $1,975

Students can study at beginner or advanced levels and should choose courses accordingly.

Spanish Phonetics and Education with Internship

BCA Study Abroad is pleased to announce a new course for Spanish Education majors and others seeking to meet their state’s licensure requirements for teaching Spanish. 

Spanish Phonetics and Education, developed by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Department of Spanish, is available this summer in Valladolid, Spain.

Course: SPA 331 Spanish Phonetics and Methodology of Teaching*

Dates: May 30 - June 19, 2015 (three weeks)

Requirements
GPA: 2.6
Language: 4 semesters of college-level Spanish

This course offers three credits in applied Spanish phonetics and phonology with an emphasis on improving pronunciation. One additional (optional) credit in middle/high school teaching methods, combined with a teaching practicum internship.  Students will also engage in non-academic activities to promote interaction with various elements of the Valladolid community and will keep a journal and complete a summary reaction paper to document development of their writing, speaking and teaching skills.


In this course, you will:

  • gain an understanding of Spanish phonetics and phonology, while improving your pronunciation of Spanish
  • learn to use basic methods and approaches to teaching beginning level Spanish
  • increase your knowledge of Spanish culture
  • prepare for the ACTFL (Oral & Written Proficiency Test)
  • visit a Spanish school and interact with professors and/or students teach English to groups of  primary and middle school students

* Prerequisites include Oral Proficiency at the 300 level and Integrated Skills at the 300 level.

Optional Six-week Course 

Following the Phonetics course, students can choose to continue with an additional six-week program.
