Academics

BCA Barcelona is located in the campus of the University of Barcelona, which is the oldest institution of higher learning in Catalonia and one of the most prestigious in Europe (www.ub.edu/homeub/en/).

Boasting 100 academic departments, the University offers 75 undergraduate programs, 353 graduate programs and 96 doctorate programs. The University of Barcelona also enjoys membership in the Coimbra Group (www.coimbra-group.be), an association of long-standing European universities committed to excellence in education and research through international collaboration. One-third of the University's courses are taught in Catalan, the official language of Catalonia; the remaining courses are taught in Castilian Spanish.

Since 1972, more than 1,500 BCA students have studied at the University of Barcelona. BCA is one of the few American programs whose students may enroll in regular classes at the University. In addition, BCA students receive a University of Barcelona student ID that allows them to use all the University's libraries and facilities.

Pre-semester course

BCA Barcelona students take an intensive course on Spanish language and culture during the three weeks before their semester classes start. The course includes grammar and conversation classes, Spanish art and history lectures. It also includes a five-day academic trip to Leon, Astorga and Burgos in Northern Spain (in the fall) or a seven-day trip to Andalucia in the south of Spain (in the spring).

Course Options

The BCA Barcelona program offers three options for you to select your classes:

  • You may choose to take only University of Barcelona courses along side Spanish students. In these courses assessment is mainly based on a final exam (some classes may also require a paper). This option is advised to students with advance Spanish language skills.
  • You may choose to enroll in BCA core courses held in Spanish by University of Barcelona associate and full professors. Assessment in these classes, taught to BCA students only, is based on a midterm, a final exam and on a written paper.
  • You may also opt for a combination of the two above: you may take some University and some BCA classes. This option is an asset to the program and many BCA Barcelona students take advantage of it.
