Sapporo, Japan

Academics

BCA Sapporo introduces students to Japanese culture and offers an intensive language program. The BCA program begins with an extended study tour to different parts of Japan. Students then take a language assessment. For beginning Japanese students, courses are in English (or in Japanese with a translator). Students who have adequate Japanese can enroll in regular courses at Hokusei Gakuen University.

University Information

Hokusei Gakuen School systems was founded in 1887 with the University opening in 1962 as one of seven schools operated under the Hokusei Gakuen, a private Christian foundation.  Throughout the curriculum, you will find the underlying values of internationalism, individual student development and social awareness as prescribed by the Hokusei Gakuen foundation.

The University has worked with BCA since 1988 to provide the best cultural immersion experience for students interested in learning more about Japanese language and culture.  Hokusei Gakuen University has a student enrollment of about 6,000 and offers courses in English literature, social work, information management, economics, and business. Independent study options are encouraged and supported, and internships are available.

In addition to the courses offered by the university, BCA students are required to spend 12 credit hours per week in Japanese language instruction. Students must study intensively outside of class, particularly to memorize Japanese characters.

Course Information

Most of students' academic work will focus on Japanese language learning, but students also take courses in English literature, social work, information management, economics, and business at Hokusei Gakuen.

Shortly after arriving in Sapporo, you will take a language placement exam to determine your level of proficiency. BCA has arrangements with Hokusei Gakuen University to offer a variety of courses during certain semesters to students through an interpreter or through a native English speaker.
