About Sydney

Sydney has been called one of the world’s most livable cities. Maybe it’s the mild climate or the beautiful setting-you can find out for yourself while exploring Sydney and its environs. With more than 70 beaches nearby, as well as numerous national parks and the incredible harbor, Sydney is perfect if you love the outdoors. You can also take advantage of all the amenities that a large, cosmopolitan area has to offer, such as a variety of ethnic restaurants, shops, opera, and museums.

Macquarie University’s campus in the Sydney suburbs sits on 135 acres of bush land; it’s surrounded by Lane Cove National Park and it includes a sculpture park and museums. At Macquarie you can take courses in a wide range of subjects, including the humanities, social sciences, business, and the natural sciences. Many BCA students also enjoy taking a course in Indigenous Studies so that they can better understand the complex history and culture of the Australian Aborigines.

At the university, you’ll live with Australian and international students at Dunmore Lang Residential College, where you can participate in student activities such as the film club, the marketing business society, the bushwalking club, or yoga. When you feel like getting away from campus, Sydney’s extensive system of public transportation makes it easy for you to reach such famous places as the Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach.

Sydney Quick Facts

  • Fort Denison was built to defend Sydney against a possible attack by Russian warships, which never happened.
  • The Sydney Town Hall is possibly the only non-religious city building to retain its original function and interiors since it was built 120 years ago.
  • Barani is an Aboriginal word of the Eora, the original inhabitants of the place where Sydney City now stands. It means “yesterday”.
  • The settlement of Sydney is said to have begun on the afternoon of 26 January 1788, when the 11 ships of the “First Fleet” dropped anchor at Sydney Cove. The aim was not to build a great city, but to establish a prison settlement for British convicts.
